Break On Through

Keith Moon and Pamela Des Barres rock around the world in 1978

Here I am again in glorious London, where I’m With the Band has been re-released in a 30 year updated edition. Aren’t I the lucky one! My first book has been in print all over the world for over 3 decades, and It certainly seems to strike a chord (!) with each generation coming up, wishing they’d been able to experience that revolutionary rock and roll heyday. With the immediacy of the gushy diary entries I suppose I’ve managed to take my readers back (and backstage) to that much coveted era, and I’m dead chuffed about it, as they say in old Blighty.

I’ve done a ton of press here and have had to fend off some wicked reporters who still insist I was a wanton woman, but I’ve mostly been treated with sincere curiosity and respect. Perhaps all these years of trying to reclaim and redeem the G Word (Groupie, of course) has started to pay off.

I always have a groovy time while traveling and take in all the new sights, sounds, treats, meets-and-greets, but the best thing I’ve experienced during the last 20 years is by far my women’s writing workshops. I just spent two evenings with my London Dolls, as they spilled their frenzied, fierce, glowing hearts all over the page. A kind of trippy magic happens in the safe space I somehow create, where they feel free sharing their shenanigans, heartaches and delicious memories. I do fall in love with them all, and they fall in love with each other, even if they've never met before. It’s a mushy kindred moshpit where we are All One. It’s just astounding how alike we all are. Different cities, same souls.

I began teaching in my hometown of Los Angeles after my lifelong friend, Moon Zappa told me about a creative writing teacher she liked and halfway through I said to myself, “I could be teaching this!” And so began this fantabulous journey -- sharing, caring, and daring my darling writers to expound, express, recall and release.

I have the privilege of being able to dip in and out of these brave women’s realities, bonding with their innermost selves, sharing their intimacies, intricacies and issues, and then we go shopping! Ha ha! Oh, the magnificent vintage scores I’ve made bobbing around various towns with my dolls. It’s like living many lives in one, and what a delight! I teach all over America -- Austin, Seattle, Chicago, Portland, Las Vegas, New York, Tulsa, and many more US cities, as well as London and Toronto. I’m heading to New Orleans in June for my first workshop in one of my very favorite bawdy towns and cannot wait to fall in love with each and every one of my girls as they walk through the door, notebooks and laptops in hand, ready to shake it up, baby! Break on through to the other side! Laugh, weep, moan, cheer and fall joyously in love with themselves while writing it all down.
