I have an idea, dolls! While you’re waving the good ol’ US of A red white and blue flag, why don’t you also wave your freak flag this Independence Day? Celebrate the freedom of YOU while celebrating that long ago day in 1776 when we were released from bondage from those greedy Brits? (Hey, you know I love me some British folks!) Let’s see what the dictionary has to say about the meaning of independence:
Back in my rockin’ heyday, I went from hippie to flower child to freak because I very much liked the idea of being my own person in a crowd. Even in a pretty groovy crowd of hippies and flower children. I dressed up my outside to reveal what was burbling within, and sometimes made a colorful racket doing it. I wanted to make an impression on the universe somehow, along with a few love-minded characters seeking our own truth with a capital T.
There’s a whole bundle of gorgeous unique magic tucked inside each one of us ready to burst forth with just a little faith and trust in who we really are. When we make the choice to cut loose, and as the Lizard King once hollered -- “break on through to the other side” -- of fear, or whatever imaginary idea that’s holding us back, a beckoning path is suddenly cleared.
Sooooo, my advice for you this Independence day is to take that fierce leap into the unknown. Otherwise you’ll never know what lies on the other side of those seemingly closed Doors. (haha!) The Buddha said, “Leap! You cannot fall,” so step onto the red carpet the Universe in all her sweetness has laid out for you, and make a colorful racket. I guarantee it’ll be a step in the right direction.
As one of my musical heroes, Dave Alvin, has been singing all around the great big US of A for a long time now, “Hey, baby! It’s the fourth of July!”

So many times, we put ourselves at the bottom of our love-list, making sure anyone and everyone comes first. Why? I’m a lifelong Jesus-loving girl, as most of you know, and something he said two thousand years ago might give you another perspective: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” YOURSELF. Yes, that’s what he said -- it’s fine and dandy to love love LOVE yourself too.
