I admit it. I DO enjoy being a girl.

I admit it. I DO enjoy being a girl.

I admit it. I DO enjoy being a girl.

Waaaaaay back in 1958 when I was only 9 years old, Rogers and Hammerstein wrote this ditty for the Broadway musical Flower Drum Song. Yes it was written by a couple of guys, but they got a lot of our girliness right. It was recorded by many ladies including the seemingly prim and proper Doris Day and the sultry Peggy Lee, making the case that siren or sweetie-pie, it’s a joy being female. In 1989, the way-ahead-of-her-time, androgynous punk folksinger, Phranc, covered the song and even titled her album I Enjoy Being a Girl. If you haven’t heard of her, please check her out.

Despite the importance of the #MeToo shenanigans permeating the atmosphere, I think we need to remember what a delight it is to enjoy our femininity in all its glory - of course, continuing to stand up for ourselves and our femaleness with passionate courage and in-your-face strength.

I’ve always been a hopeful romantic, and what’s wrong with men bringing flowers, opening car doors, dishing out compliments and thinking we’re hot? Lace and frills, garter belts and make-up reflect our luscious, precious inner selves, and doesn’t it feel good to slip on silky panties, slather on luxurious creams and squirt on beguiling scents?

Back in ’58 the goal of most women was to settle down with her “brave and free male” and have a family. Nothing wrong with that, right? At least he was brave and free. But I’m proud of my generation questioning that 50s mentality and demanding the shift for equality that continues today. I did my part. I took my birth control pills in front of all and sundry on the Sunset Strip. Hey look at me, I’m a brave and free female! Wanna fight? Haha!

Let’s not lose sight of the exquisite gift of femininity. I believe we can have it all if we believe we can. We hold all the cards anyway, even as we keep them close to our lace-clad chests. To quote the late great Tom Petty, don’t back down, but do allow yourself to be the beguiling, beautiful, haughty and mysterious doll that you are.

You don’t have to hold your sweet, sexy girliness back. Go out and lap it all up like honey — and enjoy being a girl.
